Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Ever imagined your life as an arcade game? This movie is
definitely one of those extraordinary kinds of movies I've ever watched. Unlike
the flow of usual movie films, this film is talking about a Scott Pilgrim fall
in love with a girl that happened to occur in his dream once, which is Ramona
Flowers, and need to battle all her seven evil exes in order to date her.
Synopsis:
Movie for this week is about a teenage boy, Scott Pilgrim, a
bassist in the band Sex-Bob-Omb, had an adventurous yet unexpected experience
in chasing an American girl, Ramona Flowers. Scott is first dating an Asian high
school girl, Knives Chau. Then Scott started to develop his interest in this
girl Ramona, after he dreamt about her once and saw her right after his dream.
Scott first got attacked by one of Ramona’s boyfriend, then learnt that in
order to date Ramona, Scott has to defeat all her evil exes. Scott felt upset
with Ramona’s dating history, then they broke up. The movie ended with Knives
giving up loving Scott and accepts that the relationship between Scott and her
is over. At Knives’ encouragement, Scott decided to chase and follow Ramona.
Analysis for this week:
I find that it is very hard to understand the language of
this movie as the slang is too frequently used in each and every scene. I think
I am able to get the outline of this story and the whole story of this film,
but not very detail. I find that the uses of language are very important in
every films as it must fulfil the demand of the audiences that has been
targeted. I am guessing that this movie film might not be targeting us, who did
not have English language as our mother tongue. Even though there is subtitles
for us to watch but it doesn’t really explain clearly to each sentence
especially their slang or idioms. I also find that the character Kim Pine,
which is Allison Pill, has very funny, cool and sarcastic personality, while
she only speaks very little, very on point sometimes. Well, although I find it
difficult to concentrate and get what the scenes are trying to tell, but I did
laugh at a few scenes that brought funny messages. For example, the scene which
Scott’s housemate, Wallace Wells, which is Kieran Culkin, had sex with Scott’s
sister’s boyfriend, Jimmy. The gestures and body language of Wallace are very
funny and able to make audience laugh at them. The communication between Scott,
his sister and his housemate is very funny as well, the way his housemate
betrayed him by telling the truths to his sister and the way his sisters tell
him about that his housemate sells him out.
Let’s talk about few characters now.
Character that I am going to talk about now is the male lead
of this film, Scott Pilgrim. To be honest, I do not find any attractive moves
or scenes that has performed by this main cast. Besides the opinion that I
personally do not think that the main character’s outlook is very eye catching,
I find that the character of this film does not really presented well too.
Beside that fact that Scott is characterized as an unlikable
and slack douche in this movie film, along this film, I find it very boring no
matter for the storyline this character has been through or the movements that
he has made in the film.
This character is totally fine to be less than moral or even
a funny buffoon but I find that it is not okay to be a completely douchebag
that went so crazy for a girl meanwhile does not make this film contain any
romance element at all even it is a love story. Scott is totally an ass in this
film that he begins the movie film dating an Asian high schooler named Knives
only wanted to use her to get over his previous girlfriend. Although Knives is
really childish and immature as she is just a high school student, but she
loves Scott very much and really do cares about Scott. Obviously at the
beginning we already knew that Scott is an insecure ass.
The director is somehow making this ‘Scott’ character the
same as Jack Sparrow, kind of bad ass in some way. But the difference between
Scott and Jack is Jack has actual redeeming qualities, funny, despite that
character as being a pirate he is still very likable by the audiences while
none of these are owned by the character Scott.
The loser persona in Scott is never actually lessen in him,
even all the battles are settled. He is still an annoying dislikeable
character. Everything that Scott has done in this movie film is so cowardly
also reprehensible. I personally think that this main character is literally
making me to lose all the interest in this film and not going to watch this
movie at all.
Besides, I find that the other lead of this film, Ramona, is
actually quite disappointing me as well, not in the way that Mary Winstead
acted it out too lousy, but the storyline for this character in the film is so
unacceptable for me. I find that the relationship between her and Scott is very
empty and never really stated or acted out clearly to the audience. I
personally find that it is so ridiculous for them to just start of a
relationship and be together like out of a sudden.
The love between them is basically Scott randomly dreamt of
Ramona and then the scriptwriter made Ramona to appear to Scott’s house out of
the blue to deliver some stuffs to his house. Ramona had quite a few too random
lines and decisions like “go away” to “let’s have sex right now” in a short
time with no exact reasons for her to do so. Audiences might find it confusing
that Ramona makes the story went wild and we might have no idea what their
relationship is all about.
Also, I do not understand that why Scott kept fighting for
Ramona. I find that Scott is so insane to just fight down Ramona’s evil exes
and at the end what Scott gets is to make out with Ramona. I do not get that is
this actually a love story between them or just pure sex relation between them.
Conclusion:
After I have clearly explaining my review for this movie, I
find that this movie is really just not my kind of movie. Mr Joe told us to
respect other’s art piece, so I guess I’ll just make all that as my personal
opinion and take it as I do not understand the true meaning behind this movie
or each scene.
