Final Destination

Movie that has been chosen this week is Final Destination, directed by a Hong Kong director, James Wong. It is an American supernatural horror film. I actually find that it is more like massacre from the nature force rather than horrific. This film comes in a series of different stories. It has total of 5 films under its series at this moment. The film that is going to be analysis is the first ever episode in this series. Some of the viewers posted advices on the internet which sounds something like “Final Destination has tonnes of intense scenes such as blood or gore or death scenes”.

Synopsis:

This story is about a high school student, Alex Browning, who detected that the explosion of the airplane and traumatic deaths of the passengers. There is a series of dramatic and interesting ways of death of different people along this film. They found that there is actually a pattern for all the characters to die. They actually first suspected Alex to be the murderers of all cases, but then at the end all trusted it is from the “nature force”. Throughout this film, Alex actually tried his best to save everyone but nobody choose to trust him except for his girlfriend, Clear Rivers.

Scene I like:

I found that both the mise-en-scene and mise-en-shot of this movie is quite complicated yet convincing enough. Take the few scenes at which Carter who is being irrational by parking his car on the railroad tracks and wait for the train to come, wanting to die on his own decision rather than fearing the nature who may come after him at any unplanned moment. The scene that Alex run towards Carter’s car and manage to save the life of Carter, the few particular scenes are making the audiences feel nervous and tension as all the settings make the scene look so real. The lighting of the train which is coming right into them, the movements and expressions of both actors who, one trying to save the other one, while one originally wishes for death to come yet at the end changed his mind. The view which Alex pulls Carter out from his driver seat when the driver seat belt rips, just before his car is smashed by an oncoming train, follows by a huge impact sound by two vehicles, left a very deep impression into my mind.

One of the scene that the handheld shot happened at where Alex infers that Ms. Lewton is the next on the death pattern and tried his best to rush to her house by bare feet to ensure the safety of his teacher. I personally had a very deep impression to that scene too because I am a person who have a strong belief in karma. I believe that this is what Ms. Lewton should be paying back for her disbelief in Alex. With the thinking that Alex has no good intention, Ms. Lewton decided to call the FBI agents, who then take Alex back. Anyhow, Ms. Lewton still dead by falling kitchen knife. Alex is then become the most suspected person for this whole series of murders or deaths. I feel that it is quite unfair for Alex to bear with this kind of doubt from others, because I think it is Ms. Lewton who at first does not believe in Alex’s deduce, then let the nature force to have the chance to put a hand on her. The setting of that set of scenes which the nature force caused Ms. Lewton to death is quite fascinating for me as the ways make the death became more dramatic.

Thought about the film:

What I actually find is that this movie is a horror film with no monsters or supernatural creatures or actual murderers. I once thought that this is not a horror film as it has no such scary or frightening feeling like the other horror films I knew before. Besides this, I also found that it has no such real creature such as ghosts that makes people feel nervous or anxious. The lighting or sound effect of this film if interesting as the film goes by but still I do not feel the anxiety I had for the horror films I watched before.

After the lecture of Friday, I found that actually there are quite a lot of sign and symptoms for horror film. So, I finally changed my mind that Final Destination is actually a horror film after I have studied about this topic.

Conclusion

Overall, I have my interest in this film and I find it is actually a good film to watch again as I finally found out this is classified as horror kind of film while all this time I thought it is not. I think this film has a really nice concept and even it comes with a series of it, I still do not find it boring to watch. It is also a very creative idea as there is no people filmed this idea yet before it comes out.
